Chapter Title: Companions for the Isle of Sages

-----------------------------------------------------------------

“What do you mean by that?”

“What’s going on?”

“Well, Randell asked me to go to the Isle of Sages with him.”

As Nina relayed what Randell had said, Jin’s eyes widened.

“Why would you go there? Send that informant guy.”

“You don’t know what the Isle of Sages is like. Even if they’re trained, their opponents are the Sages. I’d be better.”

“What are you talking about? You haven’t even trained. Better my ass. What, you gonna fight them with spirits?”

“No, but using spirits would make sneaking in way easier...”

“How? Hey, why do you think we have experts for this stuff? Don’t talk nonsense.”

“Yeah, you’re right.”

Nina agreed with him. Of course, she had her own thoughts, but she couldn’t compare to trained professionals.

“Right? Don’t get any funny ideas. You just hold down the fort—”

“We should ask Jack to come along too.”

“What?”

Ignoring Jin’s blurted-out words, Nina counted on her fingers.

“A three-person party definitely feels more stable. Way better than two.”

With two, if one falls, the other is likely to follow. But with three, if one goes down, the other two can hold out.

“Guess I should talk to Jack. But first, the Young Master.”

“Then I’ll come too.”

“Uh, I’ll politely decline.”

“A polite decline doesn’t start with ‘uh.’ Why not?”

“Even so, the Captain and Vice-Captain can’t both be away at the same time.”

“Then I’ll go instead.”

“Ah.”

Nina said it with a strange look on her face.

“Randell would probably refuse that.”

“What? Who cares what that guy thinks? I’ve always thought he’s got—”

Jin’s complaints spilled out like a dam breaking, and Nina nodded along. Yeah, yeah.

In truth, Randell and Jin rarely clashed, and Randell was fairly polite to Jin because Nina was his friend.

Even so, Jin absolutely hated how Randell sneered at those beneath him.

Jin’s just a good guy like that.

That’s why I like him.

After hearing Jin out, Nina spoke up.

“I get what you’re saying. But I still want to go with him. It’s not just because of Taruk, either.”

Jin downed his iced tea in one gulp. Lui refilled his cup, and Nina cooled her own tea as she continued.

“Maybe he’s finally ready to face it.”

I’d bet a single gold coin that he’s looked into his master too.

He’d been avoiding the Isle of Sages until now, turning a blind eye. But now he’s ready to confront the pain.

She wanted to be by his side when that time came.

Sometimes just having someone there was enough to give you strength.

Jin scowled at Nina, glaring as if to bore holes through her, then spat out,

“Do whatever you want.”

“Thanks for understanding.”

“I didn’t understand.”

“Yeah, yeah. Thanks for allowing it.”

“Ugh, seriously. How’d I end up babysitting this brat?”

Jin let out heavy sighs. Nina laughed.

“I’ll look after you later, so don’t worry.”

“As if you could.”

Jin smacked Nina’s shoulder. It had become his habit since he stopped patting her head.

His hand was like a bear’s paw, merciless, so Nina always yelped, “Ow!”

And then Jin would look utterly satisfied.

Rubbing the spot with her hand, Nina grumbled,

“You’re so damn strong.”

“Not as weak as you.”

Jin boldly retorted, then grumbled as he looked around the table.

“Drinking tea with no snacks?”

“Yeah, Jin only drinks tea when his throat’s parched.”

“You too.”

“I eat proper meals instead of snacking.”

Jin nodded. Fair enough. Then he asked,

“So that’s what you two were talking about?”

Nina hummed, “Hmm—”

“No, about how human trafficking is rampant in the capital.”

“Bastards I’d love to beat to death.”

“Exactly!”

Nina clapped, and Lui chuckled again. Jin narrowed his eyes.

“What? What’s so funny?”

“I thought the same thing. So I told Sir Lui to call me if he needs a hand.”

“Oh, really? Call me too, then, Sir Lui.”

“Of course.”

Lui smiled, and Jin grinned back.

◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

Jack looked puzzled.

“You want me to come along too?”

“Yeah, seems like the best option. What do you think, Young Master?”

Leaning against the window with his arms crossed, Adrian stood there.

Shadows and candlelight intertwined, flickering back and forth in a dance.

His black hair was so dark it almost shimmered blue, and Nina watched the light flow down its smooth strands before shifting her gaze to Jack.

“No good? You busy?”

“If I’m here right now, I guess I’m not too busy.”

“You can be busy even here.”

Jack scratched his chin and looked to Adrian.

“What do you think, Master?”

“If it has to be done, going together makes sense.”

With a heavy sigh, he spoke, and Nina threw her arms up in victory.

“Yes!”

Jack raised one eyebrow, then sighed.

“If you say so, I have no choice.”

He said reluctantly, so Nina stood and pulled a paper envelope from her bosom.

“A bribe.”

“Oh my, what’s this?”

Jack took the envelope with exaggerated fuss and opened it. Inside was a round button.

“Hmm... a button.”

“Even commoners wear clothes with buttons these days, right?”

“Well...”

Nina laughed at his reaction.

“It’s a collaboration between Pokko the tailor and Kiril the researcher.”

“Does it have some special ability?”

“Of course. Press the center as hard as you can and throw it—it’ll knock out everyone in a 50-meter radius.”

“Hmm.”

“Attach two together and throw for an explosion. Or swallow it...”

“Peaceful death?”

Jack asked with a grin, and Nina made a face.

“It makes you look dead. You wake up a week later, but imagine rising from a grave.”

“Expensive button. No idea what you think I get up to, but I’ll take it.”

“And this.”

Nina drew a dagger from her belt and handed it over.

“Made with mithril.”

“Can’t accept this.”

“I know. They could trace where it’s from, right? So Randell enchanted it. Melts if anyone but you draws it.”

“Magic items like that exist.”

“It’s fine. If you’re caught, we’re already in deep trouble anyway.”

Jack stared at Nina, then at Adrian.

Adrian gave a slight nod, so he accepted the dagger.

“Then I’ll treasure it.”

He felt oddly touched. As he handled the dagger, he looked at the hilt and chuckled.

“It’s engraved with a J. But it’s all crooked.”

“I did that.”

Nina looked embarrassed, and Jack looked up in surprise.

“I engraved it. Not bad for a first try, the tailor said. Said I had great strength for it.”

Jack laughed.

“Then I’ll treasure it even more.”
