"My life was pawned off for a single loaf of bread, and these villains are way too fond of me!"
—
"Hey. Hungry?"
After 3 straight days of starvation, a soft white loaf of bread appeared before me.
I devoured a loaf the size of my forearm on the spot. Watching me eat, the villain curled his lips into a sly smile.
"Now that you've eaten, shall we have a little talk?"
Just like that, my life was pawned off to a villain for the price of a single loaf of bread.
---
The man who gave me that bread was a villain.
Not just any villain, either, he was the leader of a notorious guild.
Somehow, he'd learned about my ability to see through things and came looking for me with a strange proposition.
"I'll provide the food, and you'll do the work. Sounds like a fair deal, doesn't it, kid?"
"Will I get to sleep somewhere warm? If you hit me, I'm leaving."
"Of course. Why would I beat something as tiny as you? I'll even pay you in gold."
"Deal! But aren't you going to eat the bread in that bag? Can I have it?"
He might've been a bad guy, but at least he wasn't like the orphanage director who made us beg for scraps and starved us half the time.
Compared to that, this seemed like the better option.
So I took his hand.
"Rookie, may I touch your cheek just once?"
"One Brin per touch. That's 100 won."
"Gasp! That's far too cheap! Please take my entire salary instead!"
"...I was joking."
I thought all I had to do was complete the jobs assigned to me.
But for some reason, the guild members' affection toward me seemed excessively intense.
---
For the first time, I failed a mission.
I almost got seriously hurt, but the Boss came to my rescue.
"Boss, I haven't completed the mission yet."
I said as I dangled from his side while he carried me away.
"Is that what matters right now? Are you hurt or not?"
"...I'm not."
"Good. Then let's go get something to eat. I'm starving."
I thought villains were supposed to be ruthless.
But lately... The villain boss has been acting strangely.
